Social media character counter: Instagram, X, TikTok, LinkedIn and more

Type or paste your text and see how many characters it has — counted the way each app counts — against the limit of every field: Instagram captions and bios, X posts, TikTok, LinkedIn, YouTube, Threads, Google results and SMS. It shows where the feed cuts your text with “… more”, too.

Your bio has 150 characters. Your link has no limit.

A bio can't hold everything you do. A Linktotem page can: every link, your shop, your contacts and your best work, one tap from the link in your bio.

  • Everything that doesn't fit in the bio, one tap away
  • Short bio, long page: say it all without cutting
  • See how many people tap through

How to use it

  1. 1

    Type or paste

A caption, a bio, a post, a video title — anything you're about to publish.

  2. 2

    Pick where it goes

The counter shows the limit of that field and how much room is left.

  3. 3

    Check the preview

For captions and LinkedIn posts, see what shows before “… more”.

  4. 4

    See where else it fits

The list below tells you, field by field, whether the same text fits elsewhere.

Why counters disagree

A character isn't always one character. An emoji like 👍🏽 is several code points glued together, and an accented letter can be written in two pieces. Simple counters count the pieces and get it wrong; this one counts what you see, which is how Instagram, TikTok and most apps measure their limits.

X is different on purpose: a link always counts as 23 whatever its length, an emoji counts as 2, and characters from scripts like Chinese or Japanese count double. The X field here uses those rules, so 280 means 280 for X.

The limits that matter most

Instagram: 2,200 characters in a caption, but only about the first 125 show before “… more” — put the hook there. The bio has 150 and the name 30. TikTok captions now take 4,000 characters; its bio only 80.

LinkedIn posts take 3,000 characters and show about 210 before “see more”; the headline has 220. On YouTube a title can have 100 characters, but around 70 show in search results. For Google, keep page titles near 60 characters and descriptions near 160 so they aren't cut.

SMS and accents

An SMS holds 160 characters — unless it has a single character outside the basic alphabet, like ã, õ, ç or an emoji. Then the whole message switches to Unicode and holds 70. Longer messages are split into parts of 153 or 67, and each part is billed. The counter shows which case you're in.

Common mistakes

Burying the hook. What matters has to be in the part that shows before “… more”; everything after is read by few.

Links in Instagram captions. They aren't clickable there. Say “link in bio” and keep your link-in-bio page up to date instead.

Filling the bio to the last character. A short, clear bio with one call to action does more than 150 characters of keywords.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

How many characters can an Instagram caption have?

2,200. Only about the first 125 show in the feed before “… more”, so start with the part that matters.

How many characters is an Instagram bio?

150 characters, plus 30 for the name. Emojis count as one character each.

How does X count characters?

Up to 280 per post, weighted: links always count as 23, emojis as 2, and Chinese, Japanese or Korean characters as 2. The X field here follows those rules.

What's the character limit on TikTok?

4,000 characters for a caption and 80 for the bio.

How long can a LinkedIn post be?

3,000 characters, with about 210 shown before “see more”. The headline has 220 and the About section 2,600.

Why is my SMS counted as 70 characters?

A single accented letter like ã or ç, or an emoji, switches the message to Unicode, which holds 70 characters instead of 160.

Do emojis count as one character?

On Instagram, TikTok and most apps, yes — one emoji is one character, even when it's made of several pieces. On X each emoji counts as 2.
