What is a WhatsApp link?

A WhatsApp link (also called a click-to-chat link or wa.me link) is a normal web address that opens a WhatsApp conversation with a specific number. Whoever taps it doesn't need to save your contact first: the chat opens straight away, on their phone or in WhatsApp Web on a computer.

The official format is https://wa.me/ followed by the full number in international format — country code included, without the plus sign, zeros, spaces or dashes. For a Portuguese number that is https://wa.me/351912345678; for a number in Brazil, https://wa.me/5511912345678. Add ?text= and a URL-encoded message and WhatsApp writes that message in the chat box for the visitor.

Why use a link with a pre-filled message

The first message is the hardest one to send. A ready-made message removes that friction: the visitor taps, sees a sensible sentence already written, and presses send. Businesses that answer on WhatsApp typically get more conversations this way than with a bare number.

It also tells you where each chat came from. Use a different message per channel — "Hi, I found you on Instagram" in your bio, "Hi, I'd like to book" on your booking page — and you know which one works without any tracking software.

Where to use your WhatsApp link

In your Instagram and TikTok bio, where only one link fits — which is why most creators and businesses put a link-in-bio page there and the WhatsApp button inside it.

In your Google Business Profile, email signature, website, online ads and replies to customers. And printed, as a QR code, on business cards, menus, receipts, product labels and shop windows: people point their camera and the chat opens.

WhatsApp Business, groups and privacy

The same link works for personal WhatsApp and for WhatsApp Business accounts; nothing changes in the format. Group invitations are different: they use chat.whatsapp.com links created inside the group, not a phone number.

Do people need to save my number first?

Does the link expire?

No. A wa.me link keeps working as long as the number has an active WhatsApp account. If you change numbers, create a new link.

Can I see how many people clicked my WhatsApp link?

A plain wa.me link doesn't count clicks. Put it as a WhatsApp button on your Linktotem page and you see the taps on that button in your analytics.

Why doesn't my link open the right chat?

Almost always the number format: it must include the country code and must not start with a zero or a plus sign inside the link. This tool builds that format for you.
