What a favicon is
A favicon is the little icon of a website: in the browser tab, in bookmarks and history, next to the site's name in Google results, and on a phone's home screen when someone saves the site. It is tiny, but it is what people scan for when they have twenty tabs open, and a missing one — the blank page or the host's default — makes a site look unfinished.
Because it is shown as small as 16×16 pixels, a favicon is not a small copy of your logo. It is the simplest mark you have: an initial, a monogram, a symbol or an emoji, on a colour that stands out.
Every file you get
favicon.ico holds 16, 32 and 48-pixel versions in one file; it is what browsers ask for by default at /favicon.ico. favicon-16x16.png and favicon-32x32.png are the sharp versions for tabs. apple-touch-icon.png (180×180) is the icon an iPhone or iPad uses when someone adds your site to the home screen — it is saved as a full square, because iOS rounds the corners itself. android-chrome-192x192.png and 512×512 are listed in site.webmanifest, which Android uses for the home screen and the splash screen.
The zip also has a text file with the HTML, the same you can copy above.
How to add it to your site
Upload the files to the root of your site (the same folder as your home page), then paste the HTML into the <head> of every page, or into your template's header. On WordPress you can instead go to Appearance › Customise › Site Identity › Site Icon and upload the 512×512 PNG. On Shopify, it is Online Store › Themes › Customise › Theme settings › Favicon; on Wix and Squarespace, look for Favicon in the site or browser settings.
Browsers keep favicons for a long time. If you don't see the new one, open the site in a private window or clear the cache.
Making it readable at 16 pixels
One character is the most readable; two work if they are narrow. Bold letters survive the small size better than thin ones, and strong contrast between the letters and the background matters more than the exact colour — the tool warns you when the contrast is too low. For a logo, use the simplest version, without words, and add a little space around it so it doesn't touch the edges.
A transparent background looks good on light tabs but can vanish on dark ones. If your mark is dark, give it a background colour.
Private by design
Your icon is drawn in your browser, and an image you add never leaves your device. The files have no watermark and are yours to use on any site, including clients'.
FAQ
Frequently asked questions
Is this favicon generator free?
Yes. No sign-up, no watermark and no limit on downloads. Use the favicons on any site.
What size should a favicon be?
Browsers use 16×16 and 32×32 in tabs, 48×48 on some desktops, 180×180 on iPhone home screens and 192×192 and 512×512 on Android. The zip includes all of them, plus favicon.ico with the small sizes inside.
Do I still need favicon.ico?
It's worth having: browsers and other tools ask for /favicon.ico even when a page doesn't mention it. The PNGs give sharper icons where they're used.
How do I make a favicon from my logo?
Choose “An image”, add your logo (a square version works best), set the space around it and a background, and download. Keep only the symbol: words are unreadable at 16 pixels.
Can I use an emoji as a favicon?
Yes. Tap one of the emoji or type any emoji in the letters field. It is drawn as an image, so it looks the same on every device you draw it on.
Why don't I see my new favicon?
Browsers cache favicons for a long time. Check that the files are at your site's root and the HTML is in the <head>, then open the site in a private window.
How do I add a favicon in WordPress?
Go to Appearance › Customise › Site Identity › Site Icon and upload the 512×512 PNG from the zip. WordPress creates the other sizes itself.
